Travel Smart: Real Reasons Why You Should Never Skip Travel Insurance

Updated: May 27

The Importance of Travel Insurance

Travel brings joy and unforgettable experiences—but it can also bring the unexpected. As a travel agent, I’ve seen it firsthand. That’s why I always recommend travel insurance—not to sell it, but because I’ve seen what happens when it’s needed.

Here are true stories from recent trips that show just how important it is to protect yourself before you go.

A Tour of Spain, Three Falls, some Sprains and Pains

A personal experience during a group tour to Spain in April 2025 exemplifies this necessity. While exploring historic sites, we encountered three different incidents involving falls, each with varying degrees of seriousness.

Incident One: The Minor Ankle Sprain

The first incident involved a client who tripped on an uneven surface while walking. This resulted in a minor ankle sprain. Although she was able to continue with the tour, her lack of travel insurance meant any related medical expenses after returning home would be her responsibility. This situation emphasizes how even slight injuries can lead to unforeseen costs—an expense that could have been avoided with insurance coverage.

Incident Two: A Sudden Fall on the Motor Coach

In the second incident, another client experienced a more serious issue. While the motor coach was in motion, she stood up to retrieve something from the overhead bin. A sudden turn caused her to lose balance, resulting in a painful bruise on her thigh the size of a football. This client did not seek medical attention but struggled with discomfort and walking for the remainder of the tour. Like the first client, her lack of insurance left her financially vulnerable should additional medical attention be needed later.

Incident Three: The More Serious Head Injury

The third incident was the most alarming and took place on our tour's first day. A client fell while walking and hit her head above her left eye. Concerned for a possible concussion due to her age, she visited urgent care. Thankfully, she was not diagnosed with a concussion, but she was advised to take it easy. This client, having purchased travel insurance, was able to be reimbursed for her medical expenses. This case perfectly illustrates the importance of travel insurance for covering unexpected medical costs.

The Cruise That Ended Before It Set Sail

In May 2025, Farrios Travel Adventures planned a special Caribbean cruise for a family of 17, spread across eight cabins. The occasion? A joyful celebration for a college graduate—and the family's very first cruise experience.

Excitement filled the air, and everything was set for an unforgettable journey at sea. But just days before departure, an unexpected event changed everything.

The Ripple Effect of One Traveler’s Injury on Family Travel

Despite my recommendation, the entire group declined travel insurance. Then, just three days before sailing, one traveler suffered severe burn injuries at work and had to cancel. He was planning to bring his girlfriend, who also had to cancel. Out of concern for their son, his parents decided not to travel either.

With no travel insurance, all four lost their full investment—no refunds, no rescheduling—just a costly lesson on the importance of protection when traveling. This situation is a stark reminder that emergencies can affect more than just the individual—they impact entire families and their dreams. Protecting your trip with travel insurance isn’t just smart, it’s essential for peace of mind and financial security. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Why Travel Insurance Matters

Travel insurance isn’t just about covering trip cancellations. It can protect you from:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Trip delays and interruptions

  • Lost or delayed luggage

  • Natural disasters

  • Family emergencies that force you to cancel last-minute

According to travel stats, nearly 30% of travelers experience unexpected issues. And with so many things out of your control, why risk it?

The Bottom Line: Always Consider Travel Insurance

Traveling is a rewarding experience that enriches our lives as we explore new places. However, it also comes with risks that should never be overlooked. From minor injuries and medical emergencies to trip cancellations, lost luggage, and unexpected natural disasters, the unpredictability of travel makes having travel insurance a must-have—not an afterthought.
